More than 1.2 million people have so far fled the war in Ukraine

The number of refugees increases every hour as Russia intensifies the military offensive against Ukraine.

The UN assures that more than 1.2 million people have left Ukraine because of the war and sought refuge in one of the neighboring countries and others in Europe, a figure that increases every hour as Russia intensifies military offensive against its neighbor.

According to the latest figures released today by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), 650,000 Ukrainians have fled to Poland, 145,000 to Hungary, 103,000 to Moldova, 90,000 to Slovakia and 57,000 to Romania.

On the eastern side of the Ukrainian border (corresponding to the separatist regions of Lugansk and Donetsk), 53,000 people have crossed the border into Russia and from the north 384 have left the country through Belarus.

UNHCR has counted an additional 110,000 people leaving Ukraine for other countries (not bordering Ukraine) in Europe.

The agency welcomed the European Union’s approval of the legal mechanism that allows temporary protection to be offered not only to Ukrainians, but also to citizens of third countries who had resident or refugee status in Ukraine.
