United States announced this Thursday the granting of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Ukraine for the next 18 months, which prevents the deportation of Ukrainians who are in its territory and allows them to access a permit to work and reside.
“Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence, and forced Ukrainians to seek refuge in other countries.”said the US Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, when announcing the decision in a statement.
This protection will apply to Ukrainians who have been in the US since before March 1, so it cannot be requested by those who have entered the country after that date.
Mayorkas stressed that “in these extraordinary times” the United States “will continue to offer support and protection to Ukrainian citizens.”
According to the study center Migration Policy Institute, it is estimated that there are around 30,000 Ukrainian citizens in the US with temporary visas or without legal coverage who could benefit from TPS.
This immigration program offers temporary protection against deportation and access to a work permit for undocumented immigrants who cannot return to their countries of origin due to natural disasters, armed conflicts or other extraordinary conditions.
Currently, there are a dozen countries with TPS in force, including Haiti, Honduras and El Salvador.
