The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenkowarned this Friday that the world is on the verge of the biggest nuclear catastrophe in the history of peaceful use of atomic energy after the Russian attack that caused a fire in a building of Zaporizhia centralin the southeast of the country.
“The aggressor continues to deal devastating blows to Ukraine. He is not stopped by the thousands of victims or the tragedies. Now they want to destroy the whole world“, he has written on his Facebook page. Galuschenko has denounced that Russian troops used tank, artillery and rocket fire against the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, “knowing the catastrophic consequences of their actions”.
“It is a war of annihilation, of annihilation of humanity and of our planet. Nuclear safety does not concern the enemy”, the minister stressed. He added that Ukraine had been warning the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for days of the danger posed by the war launched by Russia against Ukraine.
“We demand the intervention of this international organization and the taking harsh measures against the aggressorbut so far they have not been adopted,” he insisted.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has indicated that firefighting teams, which yesterday were not allowed by Russian troops to access the plant’s premises, established that the fire covers three floors of a training building.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyhas addressed Europe today to ask it to “wake up already” against Russia’s “nuclear terrorism”. “Europe must wake up now! The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is on fire, nuclear units are being disconnected right now,” he said in a video posted on the Telegram account of the presidential office.
