The Russian space agency Roscosmos announced that from now on it will prioritize the development of satellites for military purposes, as a consequence of the international isolation that Russia is suffering a week after invading Ukraine.
“Of course, our space program will be adjusted. To begin with, priorities will be established”, said Dmitri Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, in an interview given to the public television channel Rossiya-24.
“The current priority is the manufacture of space devices according to the needs of both Roscosmos and the Ministry of Defense”, he added.
These “space engines”, satellites in particular, will have “double purpose”, he specified.
Roscosmos has already designed military satellites for the Russian Defense Ministry.
Rogozin also announced that Russia will no longer supply rocket engines to the United States, including the RD-180 and RD-181 used to power America’s Atlas and Antares rockets. “Let them fly into space with their brooms”, he commented.
Roscosmos will stop “participate in joint experiments on the International Space Station (ISS)” with Germany, according to a letter from Rogozin sent to the German Aerospace Center and published on the agency’s website.
These scientific experiments includeMatryoshka-R”, which analyzes space radiation, or “Vampire”, whose objective is to create infrared sensors using crystals.
Rogozin also announced that all Russian scientific and technical personnel present at the Kuru space base in Guyana (French overseas department) have already left. His departure had been announced on Saturday in response to the sanctions decided by the European Union (EU) against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24.
