We are used to reading the term Kremlin in most of the media when referring to Moscow, the capital of Russia. But what does this term mean?
The Russian word ‘Kremlin’ (Russian: кремль), in its literal translation, refers to the “citadel” of the city. The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) defines this term as “the walled enclosure of ancient Russian cities and, par excellence, that of Moscow”.
In this European country you can find up to 20 Kremlins in different cities. Most are in medieval locations that have given way to large cities. The most popular is precisely in Moscow, its origins date back to the 12th century.

The importance of the Kremlin in Moscow
The Moscow Kremlin has a total area of 27 hectares surrounded by 2,000 meters of wallslinked by 20 towers of more than 70 meters each.
It is located facing the Moskva River in the south, the Red Square in the east and the Alexander Garden in the west. Inside you can see a set of civil and religious buildings built over the centurieswhich provide an account of the historical and architectural evolution of the country.
