China says Taiwan “has no right” to join the UN

Beijing considers Taiwan a province that must be reunified, even by force if necessary.

Taiwan “has no right to join the United Nations,” a Chinese official said on Wednesday after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for greater inclusion of Taipei in UN institutions.

“The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization made up of sovereign states,” Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Office of Taiwan Affairs in Beijing, told reporters. “Taiwan is part of China.”

Blinken lamented that Taiwan is increasingly excluded from the world stage and advocated a participation of the island in the “UN system”, in a statement to mark 50 years since the UN General Assembly voted to admit China. the body, thus marginalizing Taiwan.

Beijing considers Taiwan – where the Chinese nationalists fled after their defeat to the Communists in 1949 – a province that must be reunified, even by force if necessary.

Ma said that the People’s Republic of China is “the only government that legally represents all of China,” and urged Taiwan’s leaders to abandon the idea of relying on Washington for independence.

Blinken said Tuesday that “meaningful Taiwan participation in the UN system is not a political issue, but a pragmatic one.”

He added that the international community faces an unprecedented number of complex global issues, and that it is critical that everyone help address them, including the 24 million people living in Taiwan. (I)
