Colombian coffee production falls 16% in February due to adverse weather conditions

Coffee production in Colombia, the world’s leading supplier of washed Arabica beans, fell 16% in February to 928,000 60-kilo bags compared to the same month last year, due to the continuation of the rains that affected flowering, reported the National Federation of Coffee Growers.

In February 2021, the country’s coffee harvest reached 1.10 million bags.

The federation attributed the fall to “persistent unfavorable weather conditions”, in the midst of the rains that have been recorded in the main production areas and that delay flowering.

Colombian coffee exports in February fell 23% to 980,000 60-kilo bags, compared to the same month the previous year.

In the first two months of the year, Colombian coffee production fell 18% to 1.79 million bags, while exports fell 14% to 2.01 million bags, compared to the same period last year.

In the last 12 months, Colombia’s coffee harvest fell 13% to 12.1 million bags, while exports fell 5% to 12.1 million bags.

Colombia’s coffee harvest fell 9% in 2021 to 12.6 million 60-kilo bags, the lowest in the last seven years, due to increased rains and roadblocks amid anti-government protests, according to the federation.

Colombia, known for its smooth and high-quality coffees, has the capacity to produce around 14 million bags annually.

The South American country has cultivated 840,000 hectares with coffee plantations and some 500,000 families depend on this activity.
