Georgia and Moldova formally apply to join the EU

Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, has signed a document formally requesting membership. The Government of Moldova has also applied for membership, in a similar step to that taken by Ukraine and Georgia.

The Government of Moldova has also requested the country’s accession to the EU on Thursday, in a step similar to that taken by Ukraine and by Georgia and with which he hopes to start a “clear European path” that will end in full integration.

“Applying for EU membership is another important step on Georgia’s path to European integration,” Garibashvili told a news conference ahead of the signing.

According to the Georgian ‘premier’, this step “opens a new page in history and continues the efforts of our ancestors to join the common European family”, the Civil Georgia news portal has collected.

“Georgia is a European State”he insisted, before emphasizing that the country, “during its long history, has always belonged to the space of European civilization and culture”.

Thus, Georgia must now wait to receive from Brussels the status of a candidate country to enter the EU.

For her part, the Moldovan president, maia sanduhas signed the document, which has also been endorsed by the Prime Minister, Natalia Gavrilita, and by the President of Parliament, Igor Grosu, according to the Moldpres news agency.

Almost 100,000 people from Ukraine have arrived in Moldova since the start of the Russian military offensive a week ago, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). “What we are witnessing here is only a small part of the consequences of the brutal war that Russia is carrying out against Ukraine,” lamented the head of European diplomacy, who applauded Moldova’s “great effort”.
