One million people leave Ukraine in the first week of the invasion

Most of the Ukrainian refugees have arrived in neighboring countries such as Poland, Moldova, Hungary or Romania.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said Thursday in Bucharest that the number of refugees who have fled Ukraine has already exceeded the million people and that arrivals will continue to increase “if the military actions” do not stop.

In one of his acts in the Romanian capital, he has promised to support with money and other resources to Romania and other refugee receiving countries, such as Moldova and Poland.

Grandi’s visit coincided with the trip to Romania by the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyenwhich has spoken with the Romanian authorities about the imminent creation of a logistics center in Romania to centralize humanitarian aid to arrive from all over Europe and send it to Ukraine.

“For us it is important to be able to centralize all resources hereas close as possible to Ukraine,” said Von der Leyen, who thanked Romania for “pragmatism and flexibility” in dealing with the avalanche of displaced Ukrainians.

In his meeting with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, Von der Leyen spoke of the need to redouble international support to the Republic of Moldova, a country of barely 2.6 million inhabitants through which a number of refugees equivalent to 2% of its population have already passed.
