Canada guarantees that it will extend stay to Ukrainians who are currently in the country

The Government of Canada, through its Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), will take further steps to support Ukrainians, persons residing in Ukraine and to facilitate and expedite the return to the country of Canadian citizens, permanent residents and accompanying immediate family members.

This was indicated on its website by the Government of Canada, where it explained that “it will guarantee that Ukrainians who are in Canada can extend their stay or stay longer, prioritizing the renewal of work and study permits, and extending a policy that allow people to apply for a work permit from Canada.”

Extension of stay for Ukrainians in Canada

Ukrainian citizens who are in Canada on a temporary basis can apply to extend their status as a visitor, student or worker. Since January 19, IRCC has approved almost 2,000 applications from Ukrainians and people residing in Ukraine in various programs, the press release states.

According to the release, this policy would allow temporary residents, who receive a job offer, to remain in Canada and begin work while they wait for their work permit application to be processed.

IRCC will issue open work permits to Ukrainian visitors, workers and students who are in Canada and cannot return home, so they can stay longer if they wish.

Additionally, Canada will waive fees, retroactive to February 22, 2022, for certain travel and immigration documents, such as:

  • Canadian passports
  • Travel documents for permanent residents
  • Proof of citizenship
  • visitor visas
  • Work and study permits

Special measures for Ukrainians in Canada

The IRCC also made the decision to prioritize applications for new and replacement travel documents for Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members.

According to the page, more than a month ago they took steps to prioritize applications for the granting of citizenship for adoption. As well as applications for permanent and temporary residence for people with primary residence in Ukraine who want to join or travel with family, study, work or start a new life in Canada.

In support of the Government of Canada’s approach to the situation in Ukraine, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has an administrative stay of removal (ADR) for Ukraine.

An ADR is a temporary measure that can delay a removal order that would normally require a person to leave Canada immediately. The expulsion of these people will resume once the situation in their country or region stabilizes. (I)
