The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution condemning against Russian invasion of Ukraine. It has done so with the support of 141 of the 193 Member States.
The text “deplores” Russian aggression against Ukraine and “demands” Moscow to put an end to it and immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from the neighboring country. The resolution, which is not binding, has only received the votes against from Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Eritrea and 35 abstentions.
As it did in the UN Security Council, China has sidelined Putin and has abstained in the vote. A diplomatic blow to Russia which shows that the Russian president has been isolated.
The result of the vote has been received with the applause of the majority of the General Assembly, which has been meeting since Monday in a special emergency session after Russia vetoed a similar text in the Security Council.
In response to this blockade, the West went to the General Assembly – where there are no vetoes – to denounce Moscow’s actions and, above all, show its isolation on the international scene.
After continuous negotiations in recent days led by the US, European countries and Ukraine itself, the resolution was co-sponsored and received 141 votes in favor, while only four countries have joined Russia in the “no”. Among the abstentions, those of China, Cuba, India or South Africa stand out, while some countries, such as Venezuela, Morocco or Ethiopia, have decided not to participate in the vote.
To go ahead, the resolution needed the support of two-thirds of the member states voting. “The Russian government is increasingly alone”, stressed after the vote the ambassador of the European Union to the UN, Olof Skoog, who described the vote as “historic”. “Russia has chosen aggression. The world has chosen peace,” he has sentenced.
