The war in Ukraine is leaving overwhelming images and human stories that break the heart. This is the case of children with cancer who live in the Okhmadet hospital in Kiev.
These little ones, together with their mothers and relatives, have had to be moved to a basement to protect themselves from attacks of Russian troops besieging the Ukrainian capital.
Hospital staff have ensured that wants the world to know what is happening there. Among the mothers is Maryna, whose nine-year-old son suffers from blood cancer that requires regular treatment.
“There are shelling, sirens, we have to go down,” he told the Reuters news agency. “Here we also receive treatment, medicines that we have, but we need more food… basic things. We need peace”Explain.
His son is called Vasily and we can see him lying on a green couch in that makeshift bunker: You need to escape Russian attacks, but it is also vital to continue your cancer treatment.
Until now the hospital has been spared from the bombing that has reached the outskirts of the city, although staff said they had heard gunshots in recent days. In the underground bunker, dozens of children and their parents sleep on mats, some in need of extra oxygen and others hooked up to IV drips.
There the little sick they hold sheets of paper with the words “no to war” and allow themselves to be photographed by the journalists who come to tell their story.
In that hospital there are also two newborn twins. In the photographs that arrive from Kiev they can also be seen resting in that basement. What’s more there are mothers accompanying their children, who have no choice but to take refuge there.
