The space in the European Union for Russian aircraft – both public and private – has been closed. “They will not be able to land, take off or fly over EU territory. This also applies to oligarchs’ private jets,” said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission on Sunday.
The European Union is closing the space for Russian planes. Where cannot Russian planes fly?
Ursula von der Leyen announced on February 27 on Twitter that the European Union is closing airspace to Russia. The no-fly ban applies to Russian-owned, Russian-registered or Russian-controlled aircraft. They cannot land, take off or fly over Community territory.
Until Sunday, the ban was announced, among others, by Great Britain Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania. They were joined by: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, France, Belgium, Finland, Italy, as well as Spain, Portugal and Norway. Canada also made this decision. Then a decision was made to close the space to Russian planes in all European Union countries.
The gap visible on the flightradar24 map, where theoretically there is no ban, is Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Our European sky is an open sky. It is open to those who bring people together, not to those who want brutal aggression,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo explained on Twitter.
