The Secretary of Commerce of the United States, Gina Raimondo, was chosen by the president of the country, Joe Biden, as the “designated survivor”, the Cabinet member who will not be at the State of the Union address as a precautionary measure in the event of an attack on the Capitol.
The White House informed tonight of Raimondo’s appointment minutes before the start of the speech that Biden will give before the United States Congress.
The “designated survivor” is the person chosen by the president to stay outside the Capitol on a night like this so that there is a Cabinet member who can take over the reins of government in the event of a massive attack on Congress.
To prepare you for that possibility, the “designated survivor” receives intelligence information and is accompanied at all times by an aide who carries the nuclear codesin addition to having the security and transport services reserved for the head of state.
Raimondo would only have to assume the presidency if an attack killed the president, vice president and other top officials ahead of her in the line of succession. (I)
