The president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, assured this Tuesday in Ankara that the Russia’s goal is not only Ukraine but also to destabilize the Western Balkansfor which he requested Turkey’s support for the international recognition of Kosovo and its entry into NATO.
At a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Kosovar leader said that “the time has come for Kosovo to join NATO. Turkey’s role in this matter is very important.”
Stressing that Kosovo attaches importance to Ukraine’s territorial integrity, Osmani assured that “it is a very difficult situation for the continent. Russia’s objectives are clear. They are not directed only at Ukraine.”
He added that Russia’s goals include “creating instability in the Western Balkans. It directly supports Serbia. We expect the support of countries like Turkey to join NATO”.
Kosovo, a former Serbian province inhabited by a large majority of ethnic Albanians, declared unilateral independence from Serbia in February 2008.
Over a hundred countries have so far recognized Kosovar sovereigntyalthough Serbia, Russia and five countries of the European Union, including Spain, have not done so.
The Turkish president, for his part, assured that Turkey will support Kosovo’s entry into NATOwhich has had a military mission since 2008 to guarantee security in the Balkan country.
“When it comes to joining NATO. As a major member of NATO, Turkey is not opposed. We take steps for the recognition of Kosovo and we recognize Kosovo as a member of NATO,” Erdogan added. (I)
