The United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned this Tuesday four people for financing and arming the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in South Africa with the aim of expanding its operations on the African continent.
In a statement, the Treasury explained that it blocked the properties and prohibited economic transactions in the United States related to Farhad Hoomer, Siraaj Miller, Abdella Hussein Abadigga, and Peter Mbaga.
“The Treasury took this decision to disrupt and expose those who use the South African financial system to facilitate the funding of ISIS networks across Africa”, explained the Undersecretary of the Treasury, Brian Nelson, according to the statement.
According to the US government, Farhad Homer leads an IS cell in Durban, South Africa.for which he has raised funds through extortion of companies and has maintained contacts with members of IS in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Siraaj Miller leads IS in Cape Town (South Africa), where he has trained supporters of the terrorist group to raise funds through robbery.
For its part, Abdella Hussein Abadigga has been in charge of the weapons training of IS youthand has maintained contacts with members of the terrorist group in Somalia.
While Peter Mbaga has raised funds and weapons for terrorists in South Africa and Mozambique.
The State Department said in a statement that “IS has attempted to expand its influence in Africa through large-scale operations, particularly in areas where government control is limited.”
The IS leader, Abu Ibrahim al Hashimi al Qurashi, died on February 3 along with twelve other people in a US operation in northwestern Syria.
Nowadays, the group has active cells in the vast desert of central Syria, where they attack government and Kurdish forces with some regularity, while thousands of their fighters and their families have been in prisons and camps guarded by Kurdish Syrians and forgotten by the international community for three years.
