The President of Ukraine, Volodímir Zelenski, has addressed all the member states of the European Union through a telematic meeting to request formal entry into the EU and more help in the face of the crisis that his country is suffering due to the invasion and subsequent war started by Russia: “The situation has overtaken us. For many people it is a difficult day, for some it is the last day. It is a tragedy for our entire State. Thousands of people have died in the five days of the invasion of our country.”
This is how Zelensky expressed himself during his speech at the special session held in the European Parliament, where he assured that “Ukraine and its citizens should feel proud”, and appealed directly to the EU leaders: “We are fighting for freedom that you guys have. We say we’ll get it. I’m sure Ukraine’s European option is what we are heading for“Because they are, as he has warned, in an extreme situation: “We have suffered missile attacks, today we have received a terrible attack”.
“We are Ukrainians and we want to see our children, future generations alive. Yesterday 16 children died and Putin will continue to say that it is a military operation,” denounced the highest Ukrainian leader, who has insisted that his fellow citizens “be feel motivated to fight for their freedom”; a freedom that, they understand, is linked to that of Europe: “We are also fighting to be full members of Europe. Today we show the world what Ukraine is. Without you, it will be left alone. Please show that the EU He is with us and will not leave us behind. Thus life will conquer death.”
His speech has concluded in the European Parliament with loud applause which has even led some leaders to stand up and wave the flags of the Ukrainian country. Zelenski thanked the European Parliament for the gesture and, after saying goodbye to him with a smile and waving, abandoned his telematic intervention. This Monday, the president announced the signing of the formal request for Ukraine’s entry into the European Union, a process that is usually lengthy but could be significantly shortened given the current situation.
