EU and its allies are ready to adopt more sanctions against Russia in the coming days, advances France

The Europeans and their allies are ready to impose more sanctions against Russia, the French presidency said, following a video conference between the French, American, British, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Romanian leaders and representatives of the European Union (EU) and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Other sanctions will be taken, that is a priority”, and these could be adopted “in the coming days” well “it is urgent to increase the cost of the war for the president [Vladimir] Putin”, indicated a source from the French presidency, considering that the sanctions taken so far “they do more damage than President Putin had anticipated.”

The measures will beof varying importance”, such as the possibility of targeting new banks, other oligarchs or even the Russian sovereign wealth fund, according to this source.

“There is a certain reserve, we still have a lot of room for maneuver”, commented the advisers of the Elysée Palace – seat of the French presidency -, after the videoconference.

Russia “is concerned about capital flight” and Vladimir Putin “I did not expect the sanctions to be so damaging”, according to Paris.

But Western countries and their allies point to a “very strong climbing potential” with risks to civilians and “for Russia to take control of the entire Ukrainian territory.”

According to the French presidency, “Europe will have to review its prospects to learn the lessons of a crisis that risks separating Russia from the rest of the European continent in the long term.”.

However, France remains cautious about Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU. “Be careful not to make promises we can’t keep.” advisers warned, referring to the dilemma that would arise “if Ukraine were conquered by Russia”.
