European and global security are at risk after the Russian attack on Ukraine, warned the United States Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Bonnie Jenkins, who assured that Russia’s decision to start a war “will resonate in the near future and affect us all”.
In her speech at the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, the US diplomat also expressed her fear that the global economy is at risk “because of Russian actions.”
“We must send a clear message to Russia that the territory of a sovereign state cannot be taken by force, or that no country has a veto on the political path or security partners that another nation wants to have,” he said.
The deputy secretary of state noted that the unprovoked war launched by Russia “must have consequences” and called on Moscow to stop its operations in Ukraine immediately.
“We urge Russia in the strongest possible terms to choose the path of diplomacy. The world is watching her, and she will have to take responsibility,” she concluded.
Jenkins stated that the current situation could also endanger the work of the Conference on Disarmament itself, which has been in charge of negotiating multilateral arms control agreements since its foundation more than 40 years ago.
“The people we represent expect us to reduce the dangers posed by weapons of mass destruction and emerging threats, and the unsettled moment in history we live in only increases the urgency for collective action in this regard,” assured.
The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, will speak at the conference on Tuesday and in principle planned to travel personally to Geneva, although the restrictions in the European space imposed on Russia as a result of the conflict have prevented him from doing so, so he is expected to speak in the debates of the organism by videoconference.
