Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky will address the European Parliament on Tuesday after asking the EU for Ukraine’s “immediate” membership.
Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have asked the European Union as a whole to speed up the Ukraine’s entry into the European blocas a sign of support for Kiev in the midst of the Russian invasion.
These eight Member States have demanded in a joint letter that the EU provide a perspective of accession to Ukraine and for this they ask to take the first step and grant Kiev the status of a candidate country.
In the midst of war with Russia, the option of an express entry of Ukraine into the EU has gained relevance after the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was in favor and the Ukrainian leader signed the formal request for the country’s accession to the community club.
The request is a historical step and it represents a new advance in the pro-European approach adopted in recent years by Kiev, aspirations that, however, collide with the rigid process of accession to the EU, which can take decades.
This Tuesday, the European Parliament will pass a resolution along the same lines asking accelerate Ukraine’s accession processin an extraordinary plenary session that will have as its main course the monographic debate on the situation in the country and that will feature the intervention of the Ukrainian president himself, Volodimir Zelenski.
the plenary will start at 12:30 to address the invasion of Ukraine. “President Zelensky and the President of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, will come together and speak to the world,” the president of the European Parliament said on her Twitter account.
After the debate on the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the European Parliament will adopt a resolution on the matter. The text will also show support for the country’s European perspective.
