The military invasion launched on Thursday by Russia in Ukraine is becoming increasingly “more brutal”, warned the head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, who denounced the high number of civilian victims.
“The Russian military campaign becomes more brutal every day and the Ukrainian forces respond with courage. Kiev is resisting, just as Mariupol and Kharkov are resisting,” Borrell said at the end of a videoconference with European defense ministers.
“Our support for the Ukrainian forces is crucial,” said the Spanish official.
The day before, the European foreign ministers authorized the use of resources from the European Fund for Peace in the purchase and delivery of weapons and equipment to the Ukrainian forces, with 450 million euros (about US $ 500 million) being allocated to lethal pieces (weapons and ammunition).
Borrell called the defense minister’s videoconference to review the situation and coordinate the initiatives that each country in the bloc took to come to the aid of Ukraine.
In a press conference, Borrell said that Ukraine requested support with “geospatial intelligence”, adding that this is why he asked the EU satellite center, based in Madrid, to assume that responsibility.
On the situation in Ukraine, Borrell pointed out that “there are many civilian victims, and the flow of people seeking help and escaping from the war is increasing, especially on the border with Poland.”
In addition to national initiatives and EU-authorized aid, Borrell said, “four countries are willing to increase their military support on a bilateral basis.”
