Meta (Facebook), Twitter and Google Take Action to Curb Putin-Friendly Media

Social networks are beginning to reflect the proposal made by the European Union to ban the broadcasts of Russian media related to the Government.

The measure raised by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenof banning the broadcasts of the Russian media Russia Today and Sputnik in the European Union to curb “the Kremlin’s media machinery”, is beginning to have its reflection on social networks.

Although said proposal must obtain the support of the member states and must go through the legal and administrative process in order to be carried out, which will take time, the information channels and social networks are already announcing measures, according to their powers, with the same objective, that of curbing and restricting Russian and pro-Russian propaganda. Information and its control is crucial in any war. The war between Ukraine and Russia is no exception.

In this context, and responding to the request of the European Union, the technological Goal what includes Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has confirmed thatwill restrict access to the RT chain and the Sputnik agency on its social networksmedia affiliated with the Russian government.

For his part, the global director of Integrity of the American social network Twitter, Yoel Roth, has announced that the social network will introduce labels to tweets and accounts that share links to Russian-affiliated media websites to “reduce” the circulation of this type of content on Twitter.

Google also takes measures and has disabled Google Maps real-time traffic data in Ukraine to protect the safety of citizens.
About Youtube, It has been paralyzed the possibility of monetization of various channels on the platformincluding those Russian government-affiliated channels, and recommendations to these channels are being significantly limited.
