The Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women of the UN denounced today, in its examination of the situation in Peru, that the country still suffers from very high levels of violence against womenexacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The committee also warned about the discrimination suffered by Peruvian women when it comes to accessing justicewhere there is, for example, a gender bias “in cases of femicide, harassment, or publication of images and videos of sexual content.”
The UN experts regretted that young women in Peru can only access the courts to report cases of gender violence if an adult accompanies themwhile those belonging to indigenous groups, the disabled and those from other discriminated groups suffer additional barriers.
The report draws attention to the high number of marriages of minors (almost one in five Peruvians is under 18 when they marry) and also regrets the limited progress made by Peru in its goal of reducing by 20% cases of premature pregnancies.
According to 2019 statistics, 12.6% of the Peruvian adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 have had pregnancies.
The committee is also concerned about the difficulties of women’s access to reparation mechanismswhich has caused very low percentages of convictions in cases of violations perpetrated during the internal conflict experienced by the country between 1980 and 2000. (I)
