The Pentagon praised this Monday the “resistance” of the Ukrainians against the Russian invasion but warned that Moscow has not yet mobilized all its forces and asked not to make the mistake of underestimating Russia’s capabilities.
This was expressed in a press conference by the United States Department of Defense spokespersonJohn Kirby, who warned that “there has been no change in the desire” of Russian President Vladimir Putin to occupy Ukraine.
“Let’s not be wrong, Putin still has significant combat power at his disposal. It hasn’t moved everything to Ukraine yet,” the official said.
According to the US government, the Kremlin had mobilized about 200,000 soldiers around Ukraine’s border with Russia and with Belarus before the start of the invasion launched last Thursday.
According to Kirby, the strong resistance of the Ukrainians has managed to delay Putin’s plans “for a few days”who by now expected to control the capital, Kiev, but stressed that Russia must not be given up.
“The Russians have not only experienced strong and determined resistance from the Ukrainians, but also their own logistical problems.”, stressed the official, who nevertheless asked “not to assume” that the Russians “will remain behind”.
Questioned about Putin’s decision to put his nuclear forces on alert, Kirby limited himself to saying that it is “an unnecessary announcement” and that the United States will analyze it.
After months of tensions, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine five days ago that has left 102 dead and 304 civilian woundedaccording to the United Nations Office for Human Rights, although the Ukrainian authorities raise the death toll to 352.
What’s more, 422,000 Ukrainians have had to leave their country, to which must be added more than 100,000 internally displaced persons, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). (I)
