The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, today analyzed the global crisis generated by Russia’s attack on Ukraine. “We are doing something that we have never done before because we are facing something that has never happened before. An invasion in the purest sense of the military word by all means from one country to another has never happened. It is a total war from Russia to Ukraine and we cannot sit idly by. Since we’re not going to send troops, let’s at least send weapons, let’s give them ammunition, which is the first thing they ask of us,” he stressed.
In an interview on Onda Cero, Borrell has confessed that “I can’t tell you if the conflict is going to get worse, I hope notbut the European Union is not a Military Alliance, we are not designed for that, we have neither the means nor the capacities nor the will, the EU is a force for peace but at a certain point we have to help those who suffer aggression as violent and as unjustified as this”. Adding that Russia has put all its military means “against a country that is resisting much more than anyone expected”.
Regarding Putin’s threat to put all his dissuasive forces on alert, in clear reference to Russian nuclear weapons, Borrell has been forceful: “Be alarmed, be alarmed, be alarmed! I think It is absolutely irresponsible at this time to resort to nuclear weapons.”
“The nuclear threat is now being more explicit. This shows the kind of character we are dealing with. It may be a rhetorical threat but it is gigantic irresponsibility to raise the level of the conflict to those terms “she has sentenced.
