The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine causes the displacement of “more than seven million” people, said the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, the Slovenian Janez Lenarcic, on Sunday.
“Currently the estimate of the number of displaced Ukrainians is more than seven million people,” Lenarcic told a news conference at the end of a meeting of European interior ministers.
“We are witnessing what could become the biggest humanitarian crisis on the European continent in many years,” the official added.
Lenarcic pointed out that “due to the fighting, it is very difficult to conduct a survey on the priority needs” of the Ukrainian civilian population.
He mentioned that according to the United Nations (UN), “about 18 million Ukrainians will be affected, from a humanitarian point of view, either within the territory of Ukraine or in neighboring countries.”
“In any case, although these are rough estimates, the numbers are high, and we will have to prepare for these types of emergencies,” Lenarcic said. (I)
