“We request an urgent decision ordering Russia to cease military activity now and we expect the proceedings to begin next week,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyhas announced this Sunday that his country has filed a complaint against Russia before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to obtain a ruling that obliges the immediate end of the Russian invasion of his country. “Ukraine has filed a complaint against Russia with the ICJ. Russia must be held accountable for manipulate the notion of genocide to justify the aggression,” the president declared on Twitter.
“We request an urgent decision ordering Russia to cease military activity now and we expect proceedings to begin next week,” he added.
The court based in The Hague is a mechanism that both Russia and Ukraine have used in recent years around the conflict in the Donbas region that pits the Ukrainian Army against the Donetsk and Lugansk separatists.
It must be remembered that the ICJ is an international court dedicated to settling disputes between countries in accordance with International Law, but it does not have any way of enforcing its rulings, something that practically remains at the will of the states.
At the moment there are no possible negotiations between the two parties.
For its part, the United Nations Security Council will meet again today to vote on the convening of a general assembly.
The meeting will take place after Russia on Friday rejected a United Nations proposal to condemn the invasion. In this case, Russia will not be able to block this request.
