The European Union makes another move against the start of the war in Ukraine by Russia. The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, announced late last night a new package of sanctions against the country led by Vladimir Putin, among which the freezing of the assets of the Russian Central Bank “to prevent Putin can finance the war”, as well as the expulsion of “certain Russian banks” from the SWIFT system.
It should be noted that SWIFT is a highly secure network that connects thousands of financial institutions around the world, the basis for establishing economic relations between countries. In that case, different Russian banking entities would be significantly isolated from the financial and banking system. This means that it could not import products from the West, for example, since it would not be able to pay the Western supplier in any way.
Along these lines, the application of other sanctioning measures has also been reported, such as the ban on “Russian oligarchs” to carry out operations in Western markets, in addition to blocking their citizenship processes based on their investments abroad, the so-called “golden passports”.
That is the goal of the EU, in response to the attacks by Russian troops on Ukrainian territory. Some facts that Von der Leyen herself has denounced during her intervention: “Very close to the eastern border of the EU, Russia he is committing barbaritieskilling innocents and throwing bombs”. The president of the Commission added: “The world is witness to the Ukrainian heroism in resisting”.
At the same time that Von der Leyen announced these new sanctions, with the consensus of the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, the Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the British prime minister, Boris Johnson, did Joe Biden, president of the United States: “We stand with the Ukrainian people in this dark hour.”
“Even beyond the measures we announced today, we are prepared to make more decisions so that Russia to be held accountable for its attack on Ukraine“, added the top US president, in continuous contact with European leaders to continue working on a joint Western reaction to the advance of the Russian president in Ukraine, a country that is once again besieged by war and pain.
