Enel asks Italy to bet on renewables and accelerate 2030 climate goals

The energy group Enel, with a presence in Peru, asked Italy to increase its investments in renewable energies to reduce its dependence on gas from Russia, which accounts for 45% of its annual imported supplies, and to accelerate the polluting emissions targets of the 2030.

With the cost of energy at these levels, we run the risk of jeopardizing the economic recovery that we started last year”, declared the director of the energy company Enel in Italy and vice president of the association Elettricità Futuram, Nicola Lanzetta.

The price of gas in Europe increased by 60% to 143 euros per MW/hour after the Russian president, Valdimir Putin, announced the invasion of Ukraine, an increase that today has been reduced by 24%.

Lanzetta argued that the strong commitment to renewables is crucial for “rid the country of its dependence on gas” and encouraged Italy to “anticipate the 2030 goals″ in terms of emissions.

The European Union wants to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by 2030.

At has committed to abandon gas-fired power generation by 2040 and coal-fired power generation by 2027, and to replace its thermoelectric portfolio with new renewable capacity and hybrid renewable energy storage solutions.
