Agreement in the EU to sanction Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov with the freezing of assets

The countries of the European Union (EU) reached an agreement on Friday to sanction the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and his chancellor, Sergey Lavrov, for the Russian offensive in Ukraine, diplomatic sources said.

According to these sources, the block would adopt a freezing of assets or goods that Putin or Lavrov possess in the European space.

The measure will be added to the package of sanctions that European leaders approved on Thursday and that foreign ministers must validate this Friday, according to the same sources.

These sanctions approved on Thursday focus on Russia’s energy, finance and transport sectors and also set restrictions on the export of technology and the granting of visas.

Two of the diplomats consulted said that the last reservations to these sanctions had been presented by Germany and Italy, but that the agreement had been reached.

That agreement would also allow adding to the package of sanctions the veto of trips to the European space for bearers of Russian diplomatic passports, the sources limited.

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, had made a call to toughen European sanctions on the day.

Shortly after Zelensky’s call, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said on Twitter that they were preparing “urgently” more sanctions against Russia.
