Russia vetoed this Friday in the UN Security Council a resolution proposed by the United States and Albania to condemn its invasion of Ukraine and demand the departure of Moscow’s troops from the neighboring country.
The text, co-sponsored by dozens of countries around the world, obtained the support of eleven of the fifteen members of the Security Council, three abstentions – from China, India and the United Arab Emirates – and a single vote against, from Russia.
The resolution received the favorable vote of 11 of the 15 members, but Russia’s right to vetoone of the five permanent members of the highest UN body, along with the United States, China, France and Great Britain, left the text on dead paper despite the fact that it had been softened in the previous hours to “guarantee” abstentions and prevent these three countries will vote against, according to a diplomat.
