The “Facebook Papers” project represents a unique collaboration between 17 American journalistic organizations.
Journalists from all types of news companies, large and small, worked together to gain access to thousands of pages of internal company documents obtained by Frances Hauen, the former Facebook product manager who is now denouncing the company’s mismanagement.
Another consortium of European newspaper companies had access to the same material and members of both groups began publishing content related to their analyzes of the documents on Monday, October 25, at 7 a.m. Eastern United States.
The date and time were set by the organizations involved so that they all had time to properly analyze the documents, report on relevant details, and give Facebook’s public relations team the ability to respond to questions arising from the investigation.
Each member of the alliance carried out their own independent investigations of the content of the documents and their meaning. Each also had the opportunity to participate in information sessions in which data and context related to the documents were provided.
The launch of the project of the “Facebook Papers”Follows another similar project from The Wall Street Journal, based on the same documents, and presentations by Haugen in the program “60 minutes”, From CBS, and before a Senate subcommittee on October 5.
The documents themselves are redacted versions of disclosures Haugen made over seven months to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, in which he said Facebook prioritized earnings over safety and not shared with its investors and the public the results of its own investigations.
Their allegations span a number of fronts, from Facebook’s efforts to gain a wider audience to the harm its platforms can do to children and its alleged role in promoting political violence.
The same versions of those complaints drawn up by Haugen’s legal team are being turned over to Congress as part of its investigation. This process continues and the legal team at Haugen continues to deliver material to Congress.
The alliance that produces the Facebook Papers will continue to report as more documents are released.
