The Russian attack includes “three main axes of assault,” the official continued: one from the south to the north, “basically from Crimea to a city called Kherson”; and a second from the north, “from Belarus to Kiev”.

A third axis runs from the Russian region of Belgorod to the outskirts of Kharkov, the country’s second largest, located in northeastern Ukraine, the source added.

The initial deployment of the United States

On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced that it planned to send eight F-35 fighter-bombers, which were based in Germany, to “various locations” on NATO’s eastern flank. This Thursday, six of those F-35 fighters were sent to the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, the Spangdahlem air base in Germany reported in a statement.

According to The Washington Post, two of the fighters have traveled to Estonia, another two to Lithuania and two more to Romania; and several Apache helicopters are expected to head to eastern Europe on Thursday.
