They are hard images, which stir. Images of the consequences of Russian attack on Ukraine. Images of the other side of war, that of millions of innocents facing an uncertain future.
They are only a few days old. They are babies from the neonatal intensive care unit of a children’s hospital in Dnipro, in eastern Ukraine. They had to be moved Thursday to a makeshift bomb shelter in the basement of the building.
“This is the NICU. In a bomb shelter. Can you imagine?” doctor Denis Surkov, head of the neonatal unit at the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Children’s Clinical Hospital, told the Times. “This is our reality,” he adds.
In the video that accompanies these lines published by The New York Times Babies are left lying in rows and wrapped in blankets, while others are cradled by hospital staff. “We were nervous, very confused,” admits Surkov.
The city of Dnipro was bombarded with missiles yesterday after Putin gave the order to his Armed Forces to attack the country.
