Zelensky: Russian incursion into Chernobyl is a declaration of war on Europe

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, denounced that the Russian incursion into the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is “a declaration of war against all of Europe”.

“The Russian occupation forces are trying to take over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Our defenders are giving their lives so that the 1986 tragedy does not repeat itself,” Zelensky wrote on his Twitter account.

Zelensky added: “This is a declaration of war against all of Europe.”

As reported by Anton Guerashchenko, adviser to the Ministry of the Interior, Russian troops have invaded Ukrainian territory through the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the scene of the greatest nuclear catastrophe in history.

“The National Guard, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of radioactive dumps, is fighting with all its might,” he wrote in a statement.

The official warned that the deposits are radioactive remains that if damaged, “nuclear dust can spread throughout the territory of Ukraine, Belarus and the countries of the European Union.”

The Chernobyl exclusion zone, which is separated from Belarusian territory by the Pripyat River, which gives its name to the city where the workers of the Soviet plant lived, has been patrolled for weeks by the Ukrainian National Guard.

In anticipation of a possible attack, last Friday the Ukrainian authorities suspended tourist trips to the Chernobyl zone, a very popular destination among foreign tourists in recent years.

A French-made sarcophagus now covers the damaged fourth nuclear reactor that spread up to 200 tons of material with a radioactivity of 50 million curies, equivalent to 500 atomic bombs like the one dropped on Hiroshima.
