The attacks on Ukraine are “the initial phase of a full-scale invasion” that aims to take Kiev and “behead” the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a senior US defense official said Thursday.
That Pentagon source, who requested anonymity, detailed in a press conference how Washington analyzes the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began this morning and has already led to the death of several dozen people.
“We believe that they have every intention of basically decapitating the (Zelensky) government and installing their own form of government.which would explain these early advances towards Kiev,” the official was quoted as saying. CNN.

The Russian attack includes “three main axes of assault”, continued the official: one from the south to the north, “basically from the Crimea to a city called Kherson”; and a second from the north, “from Belarus to Kiev”.
A third axis runs from the Russian region of Belgorod to the outskirts of Kharkov, the country’s second largest, located in northeastern Ukraine, the source added.
The United States estimates that this morning more than 100 missiles were launched on Ukraine from Russia and Belarus, and that some 75 Russian planes were involved, according to the official..
On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced that it planned to send eight F-35 fighter-bombers, which were based in Germany, to “various locations” on NATO’s eastern flank.
This Thursday, six of those F-35 fighters were sent to the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, the Spangdahlem air base in Germany reported in a statement.
According to the newspaper Washington Post, two of the fighters have moved to Estonia, another two to Lithuania and two more to Romania; and several Apache helicopters are expected to head to eastern Europe on Thursday.
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, met early this Thursday with members of his National Security Council to discuss the invasion of Ukraine, before discussing the issue with the rest of the G7 leaders in a virtual meeting. (I)
