After invading Ukraine last night, the Russian president, Vladimir Putinstated this Thursday that “I had no choice” to attack the neighboring country to defend Russia from security threats.
“It should be clear: the things that are happening they are a forced measure“, he defended during a meeting with businessmen in the Kremlin. “They simply they left us no choice“, he added, after remaining silent throughout the day after ordering a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
The president, who ordered the attack around 06:00 (local time) on Thursday, maintains that the security risks that have been generated for the country made him make this decision. “The risks in the security sphere are such that it was impossible to respond with other means“, he stated.
Putin was thus referring to the refusal of the United States and NATO to grant Russia the binding security guarantees that Moscow demanded, in which they would commit not to expand the Atlantic Alliance further east; that is, not to include Ukraine and not to place offensive weapons near Russian borders.
“To be honest, I am even surprised that we have not advanced one millimeter in any matter” of those that concern Russia, Putin has affirmed, who has insisted: “I repeat: it is a measure that we have been forced to takeBecause they [en Occidente] could create such risks for us that it is not clear how our country could continue to exist.
