The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, today expressed his concern for the safety of the Ukrainian population following the Russian military attack, and called for “civilians and essential services to be protected”.
“Our message to the parties to the conflict is clear: uphold international humanitarian law,” Maurer said on his official Twitter account.
The head of ICRC, an organization devoted to the protection of victims of armed conflicts for a century and a half, stressed that members of the organization are already responding to humanitarian needs in the area “and they must be allowed to continue their work of saving lives”.
Last week the organization had already warned that the escalation of hostilities was endangering essential services, and for example the two main pumping stations in the Donetsk region, vital for the supply of drinking water for a million people, had been destroyed. . (I)
