NATO leaders will meet this Friday in an emergency by videoconference to prepare the response to the Russian invasion.
NATO members announced this Thursday that will take action to strengthen the defense of the allies after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Our measures are and will be preventive, proportionate and will not promote escalation,” the Atlantic Council, NATO’s executive body that brings together the 30 allies, said in a statement after its extraordinary meeting.
After an emergency meeting at the level of ambassadors after activating article 4 of the treaty, which provides for assistance to allies in the face of the risk of attack, NATO has convened the leaders this Friday by videoconference.
On the table will be the activation of NATO’s defense plans and the decision to reinforce the presence of the Atlantic Alliance on the eastern flank after the Russian military operation in eastern Ukraine.
This intervention force is made up of 13,000 troops with the capacity to deploy in any scenario within a period of five days and for a maximum of 30. Just a month ago, the United States announced that it was putting 8,500 troops on alert to support a possible activation of NATO’s rapid-action forces in the face of Russian aggression.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is expected to break down the details of the response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine at a midday press conference.
Condemnation of Russian actions
The allies have expressed their condemnation of Russian actions in eastern Ukraine, including the recognition of the rebel regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. “The allies will never accept this illegal recognition,” they have pointed out.
In any case, given the ongoing Russian military operation, the Atlantic Council urges Russia to reverse the path of violence. “Russian leaders are responsible for the consequences of their actions. Russia will pay a high economic and political price,” members of the military organization have assured.
