Ukraine is under artillery fire along its northern border with Russia and Belarus, the border guard service said on Thursday, noting that Ukrainian forces were responding to the attack.
An official from the Ministry of the Interior reported on his side the fall of the city of Shchastia, in southeastern Ukraine, at the hands of pro-Russian separatist rebels.
Border guards said in a statement that Russian forces are supported by Belarus and have launched an attack from the south from the Crimean peninsula, occupied and annexed by Russia in 2014.
“Attacks against border units, border detachments and checkpoints were carried out with the use of artillery, heavy equipment and small arms,” they added.
“Actions by enemy groups of sabotage and reconnaissance were also recorded,” according to the statement.
