The European Union announces “massive” sanctions against Russia

Ursula von der Leyen confirms that the package of measures will go directly to the table of the EU leaders, convened for an emergency this Thursday in Brussels, where the President of Spain will also attend after canceling the conference of presidents scheduled for tomorrow.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced that they will respond with “massive” sanctions to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. Likewise, he has assured that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will pay” for an “unprecedented” attack.

European leaders have unanimously condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In an official statement together with the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, von der Leyen stressed that the goal is not just Donbas, not just Ukraine, but “the stability of the EU and the order of peace”.

The package of measures will go directly to the table of the EU leaders, convened for an emergency this Thursday in Brussels, where the President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, will also attend, after announcing the cancellation of the conference of presidents scheduled for tomorrow.

According to the president of the European Commission, the idea is attack strategic sectors of the Russian economy; block Russian banks’ access to European financial markets and freeze Moscow’s assets in the Union. It is designed to take a heavy toll on the Kremlin’s ability to finance the war.

For the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Joseph Borrellthese “are the darkest hours for Europe since the end of the Second World War”, since “a major nuclear power has attacked a neighboring country and is threatening any other state that may come to its rescue with retaliation”.

In a press release issued this Thursday, the Government of Spain has “strongly” condemned the military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and has shown its solidarity with the Ukrainian government and people.

The French President, Emmanuel Macronfor its part, has called for Russia to “immediately” suspend its military operations in Ukraine: “France strongly condemns Russia’s decision to wage war on Ukraine. Russia must immediately stop its military operations,” he said.

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholzwhich has condemned the attack, considers it a “flagrant breach of international law” that “cannot be justified under any circumstances.”

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnsonhas assured that “the West will not wait” while Russia attacks Ukraine, in a conversation with the president of this country, VolovĂ­mir Zelenski, after the beginning of the Russian offensive.

The US President, Joe Bidenhas accused his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, of carrying out an “unjustified and unprovoked attack” against the Ukrainian people and has warned of the “catastrophic” consequences that it will entail.
