Russia-Ukraine crisis: Before the UN Peru makes a call to de-escalate the conflict

Peru expressed this Wednesday its deep concern about the evolution of events within the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, as well as on the eastern border of Ukraine and Russia, and advocated a peaceful and sustainable solution through diplomatic channels.

The Permanent Representative of Peru to the UN, Ambassador Manuel Rodríguez Cuadros, considered that it is imperative that all hostilities and violations of the ceasefire cease in the area.

He added that Peru reaffirms its conviction that international peace and security entails the obligation of all States to resolve conflicts through peaceful means of dispute resolution applyingstrictly, the principles of respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law, the non-use of force or the threat of the use of force, respect for the sovereignty, the territorial integrity of States, and the protection of the human rights of populations.

He added that the recognition of the independence of the separatist territories and the deployment of military forces in these territories, are incompatible with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and constitute a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

In addition, urged the parties involved to commit all their efforts to de-escalate the conflictlower tension, start a de-escalation process, build trust and find the most appropriate means to start consultations and negotiations that make a negotiated solution possible, as prescribed by international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

“In the current difficult and complex situation, Peru considers that it is essential and peremptory to make use of the means that provides diplomacy to ensure consultations and negotiations that ensure a peaceful solution and sustainable that takes into account the legitimate interests of the parties, in strict respect of the Charter of the United Nations and the norms of international law”, Ambassador Manuel Rodríguez Cuadros said.
