The popular Irish brewer Guinness announced the launch of a pilot agricultural program to reduce the carbon emissions of its barley suppliers, and thus be able to offer a ‘pint’ (classic measure of almost 1/2 litre) more respectful of the environment .
Within the framework of this initiative, starting this year the brewer will work in collaboration with 40 Irish farms with the aim of reducing carbon emissions in the production of barley, a key cereal to produce the malt for its famous dark beer.
In addition, the company plans to extend this collaboration to different Irish farmers and suppliers over the next three years and hopes that this will lead to better soil health, less use of synthetic fertilizers and increased biodiversity.
Walter Furlong Jr.., whose farms located in the southeast of Ireland are integrated into this program, noted that his family is “delighted to partner with Guinness on this initiative.”
“The outstanding thing about regenerative agriculture is its simplicity to be able to face it. It is not a complex process: it works in harmony with nature and provides economic benefits to farmers”, he added.
