UN Security Council holds emergency meeting after Russian operation in eastern Ukraine

According to international media, the UN Security Council called an emergency meeting over Russia’s decision to enter eastern Ukraine.

During the early hours of the morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in the Donbas region, where the Lugansk and Donetsk republics are located, led by pro-Russian separatists and recognized on Monday by Moscow.

Days before Russia had approved sending troops to these republics to maintain “peace”, but until today the order to execute that decision had not been given.

Putin even called on the Ukrainian forces in that area to surrender and lay down their arms and “go home,” according to a publication by CNN. This chain also indicated that one of its teams had reported explosions in an area near the capital, Kiev.

Putin’s message came hours after the Kremlin claimed to have received a request for help from pro-Russian separatists to “counteract” the Ukrainian army. AFP.

Throughout the day, Ukraine mobilized its reservists from 18 to 60 years old, approved the state of emergency and announced that it had been the victim of a new massive cyberattack.

“Nearly 200,000 Russian soldiers” are deployed on the border with Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday in an address to the nation, adding that he had unsuccessfully requested a meeting with Putin.

Before the fact, members of the UN Security Council requested an emergency meeting, which is already taking place at this time.

Shortly before, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin directly from the UN Security Council, urging him to “prevent his troops from attacking Ukraine” in case it is confirmed that “an operation is in the course of preparation”.

His deputy for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, needed to have information about a “closure of airspace” of civil flights by Russia near the border with Ukraine, and that “military columns were heading towards Ukraine”, although she specified that the data could not be verified by the UN.

At the same emergency Security Council meeting, the second in three days, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, made a similar request to the Russian president.

“Return your troops, your tanks, your planes to Russia!” the diplomat demanded. “Avoid the abyss before it’s too late,” she added.

US President Joe Biden has accused Putin of launching an “unprovoked and unwarranted” attack on Ukraine and of betting on a “premeditated war” that will cause “catastrophic” losses. (I)
