A jury on Tuesday found three white men guilty of hate crimes for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a black runner in Georgia two years agoaccording to local media reports.
Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael and their neighbor William Bryan were convicted of the violent death of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, while jogging on public roads in that southern state in February 2020. All three are serving life sentences for the murder.
During the hate crimes trial, prosecutors recounted that the killers shouted racist slurs, as well as a history of racism by those convicted.
Today was a new trial, this time in federal court. In the previous one, held on January 7, 2022, all three were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.
The McMichaels and Bryan chased Arbery in their pickup trucks on February 23, 2020 as the young man ran through their neighborhood near the coastal city of Brunswick.
Travis McMichael confronted Arbery as he passed by his truck and shot and killed him.

For more than two months, the police did not make any arrests and it was necessary to broadcast a video of the crime, widely distributed on the internet, for the investigation to begin.
Arbery then became an emblem of the Black Lives Matter movement during the massive anti-racist and anti-police violence demonstrations in mid-2020.
The McMichaels had entered plea deals last month on hate crime charges, but a judge threw out the deals after they Arbery’s relatives were vehemently opposed to such arrangements. (I)
