He beheaded his son and the dog
Faced with Haefs’s refusal not to want to open the door, the agents leaned out of one of the windows of the residence and observed the heartbreaking scene: a decapitated child. At that time, they decided to enter the force to arrest the woman.
Little Karvel Stevens’ blood was found smeared on the front steps and his body on the kitchen floor. After the search carried out in the house, they noticed another overwhelming scene, when they found a decapitated dog in the basement area.
Next to the body of the pet there were two knives and a screwdriver covered in blood, which suggests that they were the weapons with which he took the life of his son and the canine.
Tasha Haefs had scratch-like wounds on her hands, and traces of blood on her feet and thighs, where a puncture wound was observed.
The woman was held without bond and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, for which she remains in the Jackson County Detention Center. Prosecutors ordered the respective mental evaluation.
The crime of the child has the city in shock. The mayor of Kansas, Quinton Lucas spoke through his networks, warning of the need to avoid this type of tragedies.
We don’t yet know why an elementary school aged child was killed this morning, but we understand the pain a family, school, and community are facing. May we see that the assailants are swiftly brought to justice and may we resolve to avoid more preventable tragedies like this.
