Peruvian writer and Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa is “impatient” to enter the French Academy, reveals the institution’s perpetual secretary, Hélène Carrère d’Encausse.
“They just chose it. He has to prepare his speech, and the person receiving it has to prepare his. That takes its time. But he is very interested. he is a little impatient”, explained the head of the French Academy.
Vargas Llosa, 85, was elected on November 25. It is the first time that an author who does not write in the French language enters this institution founded in 1635.
“He asks all the time that we send him things, he visits the website, he sends us comments permanently. he is passionate about” this new intellectual adventure, added Carrère d’Encausse.
This 92-year-old historian holds the permanent secretariat of the Academy (perpetual according to the official definition of her position).
According to the rigid protocol of the institution founded by Cardinal Richelieu, new members are received during a closed-door ceremony, in which the candidate reads his speech and an academic “host” answers him.
“I’ve already told you I can’t perform miracles. He writes; he is not one to rest on his laurels. He is interested, and it seems to him that he is not fast enough, especially in today’s world. But in today’s world, where nothing is fixed anymore, institutions are fundamental.”, the academic reasoned.
Vargas Llosa, novelist and essayist, has been a member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language since 1994.
He is considered the last representative of the “boomLatin American literary. He is fluent in French, having lived in Paris for a few years in the early 1960s.
