Russia approves the use of military force outside the country

The Russian Federation Council, the Upper House of the Russian Parliament, unanimously authorized this Tuesday the use of the Armed Forces of the country in foreign territorybefore the conflict in the east of Ukraine.

According to information collected by the Russian Interfax news agency, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Nikolay Pankovhas justified that the situation in Donbas “is intensifying” and Russia “should put the residents (in the region) under its protection.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday recognized the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk and hours later ordered the entry of the Russian Armed Forces into them within the framework of a “peacekeeping mission“, some decisions harshly criticized by the majority of the international community.

The State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, ratified on Tuesday the Treaties of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Aid with both regions.

Hours before, the self-proclaimed republics have approved laws on the ratification of the friendship treaty with Russia. Thus, the popular councils (parliaments) of both popular republics have unanimously approved this law to ratify the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Aid among those present.
