European partners announce sanctions against Russia in response to Moscow sending troops

For its part, Russia has threatened Ukraine with sending new troops in the event of a military response by Kiev to Russian recognition of the secessionist regions in eastern Ukraine.

European partners have announced at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council that they will issue sanctions against Russia in response to the sending of troops by Moscow to the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, whose independence the Russian side recognized on Monday.

“With our European partners we are preparing specific sanctions against those who took part in this illegal decision“, said on Monday night the French ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière.

For her part, the United States ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said at the emergency meeting that the statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin to send “peace forces” to the region it’s “nonsense”.

“This move by President Putin is clearly the basis of Russia’s attempt to create a pretext for a major invasion of Ukraine“, he stressed, adding that he had “destroyed the Minsk agreements”.

“Essentially, Putin wants the world to travel back in time. To a time before the United Nations. To a time when empires ruled the world. But the rest of the world has moved on. It’s not 1919. It’s 2022“, has riveted.
