NATO considers that Vladimir Putin’s decision to officially recognize the independence of the Donbass republics makes it difficult to resolve the conflict and Emmanuel Macron requests an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.
The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has given a new twist to the Ukraine crisis by recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luganskin the eastern Ukrainian region of Dombass, which has immediately generated the rejection and condemnation of the main international actors involved in this crisis in support of Kiev: the United States, NATO and the European Union.
The president of United States, Joe Bidenwill sign “soon” an executive order with economic sanctions against Donetsk and Lugansk, as reported by White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
The executive order will ban new investment, trade and other economic transactions by US institutions and citizens in Donetsk and Lugansk, Psaki added.
The European Union (EU) is also going to react with “sanctions” against those “involved” in the “illegal” decision to recognize the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk, as announced in a joint statement by the President of the European Council and the European Commission, Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, respectively.
NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberghas also condemned Russia’s decision and considered that “it erodes the efforts towards a resolution of the conflict”.
For his part, the President of France, Emmanuel Macronhas condemned Putin’s decision and has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.
“It is clearly a unilateral violation of Russia’s international commitments and an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Macron denounced in a statement released by the Elysee.
